I had the luxury to work with Sarah Crane, a New-York based actress who has worked all around the country, including Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre, the nation’s longest continuously operating theatre. When we performed in the musical Footloose together, we shot promotional dance portraits for her. These dance photos are perfect for use on her website, social media, and any other promotional use she may have. They are also fantastic to use as keepsakes, as images like this will be cherished by her in her later years, and when printed will outlast her and will become heirloom photographs that will be passed down through generations.
These photos were taken outdoors utilizing a variety of backgrounds and different natural light setups in order to create a diverse set of images. In this image, Sarah appears to float in mid-air. In reality, she she was performing a changement with her arms in a modified second position and her head facing upwards. The most important thing was to make sure her feet were pointed, her hands were facing down, and her sternum and head were raised; this body architecture gives the illusion of floating and upward movement, which is a very interesting and sought after aesthetic for dance imagery!
Sarah is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory at Berkeley’s BFA in Musical Theatre program. Many of people who have attended BoCo have graced the Broadway stage, movies, and television, including Alysha Umphress, Kimiko Glenn (Waitress, Spring Awakening National Tour, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black), Barbara Cook, Erin Davie, and Katharine McPhee (American Idol, Smash), among others. Boston is a train ride away from Philadelphia via Amtrak.
